Our Programmes
The Mamelodi Initiative runs several different programmes throughout the year, each designed to support academic excellence and personal development for Mamelodi high school students.
Summer Jam
The Mamelodi Initiative Summer Jam is a two-week, all-day programme in January designed to focus on life-long skills for Mamelodi high school students. Launched in January 2011, the programme focuses on:
- Study skills
- Leadership skills
- Community engagement
The morning time focuses on skills curriculum while the afternoon allows students to explore various enrichment workshops.
Serves: Grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12
Winter Jam
The Mamelodi Initiative Winter Jam is a three-week, all-day programme running between June and July designed to focus on academic excellence. The curriculum focuses on the maths and English requirements of South Africa’s national curriculum.
The aim of the morning curriculum is to move our youth toward performing at or above grade level in their subjects, by focusing on maths and English. The afternoon is geared toward exploration and enrichment activities.
Serves: Grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12
Road to Finals
The Mamelodi Initiative’s Road to Finals (RTF) programme consists of extra classes that address the challenges of overpopulated classrooms and high student-to-teacher ratios in Mamelodi schools. These classes provide focused attention on core subjects, with particular emphasis on mathematics and English. Additional subjects include life sciences, physical sciences, accounting, and others.
Classes are held weekly after school and on Saturdays at our partner schools throughout school terms (February-June and August-December), combining academic rigor with community engagement to help students reach their full potential.
Serves: Grades 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12
Youth Leadership Council
The Youth Leadership Council (YLC) empowers young leaders in Mamelodi to make positive changes in their community. Meeting monthly from February through November, students develop leadership skills, civic engagement, and a voice in shaping the future of their township.
